There is no set-time for completing the walk, everyone walks at their leisure. At a leisurely pace, it takes approximately 40 mins for a patient with chest/lung conditions to complete a 1 mile walk. Can I have an idea of how far a 1 mile walk would be? A leisurely pace from the Chequer's centre in Maidstone to the Maidstone East Train Station would be just under 1 mile (0.9 miles to be exact). Many of our patients with COPD regularly walk this distance during their routine weekend shopping in Maidstone Town :-) Patients with COPD or other lung-diseases may wish to take a slower pace, and you can even stop earlier if you wish. Refreshments Please bring bottled water, snacks and drinks in a back-pack, when you walk How can I prepare for the walk? If you are an asthma or COPD patient, wait till Spring (April, May) to start practising for the walk. Start practising in stages and slowly build up your stamina and strength. Do follow this link http://copd.newlifeoutlook.com/safe-walking/ , where useful information on how to prepare for walking is given for COPD patients. Do contact Dr. Husain at Maidstone hospital ([email protected]) or any of the respiratory team doctors for advice. |

Is walking advisable or good for patients with COPD? The consensus agreement among medical doctors and scientists is that walking is VERY good in building up your stamina and fitness to cope with COPD. A study in 2014, by a Spanish team of researchers found that walking over 2 miles daily have been shown to reduce the number of hospitalisations in patients with COPD. Thus, training for this event, and gradually building up your stamina towards July would be a good thing for the future of your health. If you find the information in the research paper below difficult to follow, please discuss this with your GP or with Dr. Syed Husain ([email protected]) for more information.
